Student Visa in Japan: Complete Settlement Guide (2026)

Last updated: March 2026

As a student in Japan, you handle most administrative steps yourself — your school may provide guidance during orientation, but unlike work visa holders, you do not have an employer managing your insurance or pension. The good news: costs are significantly lower for students.

What to Do After Arriving

1

Register at your Ward Office (within 14 days)

Register your dormitory or apartment address. At the same visit, enroll in National Health Insurance (NHI) and National Pension.

2

Enroll in National Health Insurance (NHI)

Mandatory for all students. Premiums are very low in your first year (~¥10,000–15,000/year) because they are based on previous year's income. Apply for the 70% reduction at the ward office.

3

Apply for pension exemption

Students can apply for a pension exemption (免除申請 / Menjo Shinsei) at the ward office. This is highly recommended — it waives payment while maintaining your enrollment record.

4

Get a phone/SIM

Needed for bank account, part-time job applications, and daily life. Monthly SIM plans are available with your Residence Card. Some MVNOs offer student discounts.

5

Open a bank account

Japan Post Bank (ゆうちょ銀行) is the easiest option for students — no 6-month waiting period. Many universities provide guidance on opening an account during orientation.

Student-Specific Information

Part-Time Work (アルバイト)

You must obtain "Permission to Engage in Activities Other Than Those Permitted" (資格外活動許可) before working. Maximum 28 hours per week during school, 40 hours per week during holidays. Apply at the airport upon arrival or at the Immigration Bureau.

Housing

Check if your school offers a dormitory (寮) first — typically the most affordable and hassle-free option. Share houses are a good alternative. For private rentals, your school may act as guarantor.

Student Discounts

Student commuter passes (通学定期) are significantly cheaper than regular passes. Many museums, attractions, and some mobile plans offer student discounts with your student ID.

Visa Duration & Renewal

Typically 1 year or 2 years, matching your program length. Renewable if you continue studies. Your school's international office usually assists with renewals.
