Living in Kyoto as a Foreigner

Last updated: March 2026

Kyoto is Japan's cultural capital — UNESCO World Heritage sites, traditional architecture, and a strong university ecosystem. But it is also headquarters to Nintendo, Kyocera, Omron, and Murata Manufacturing. The combination of culture, tech, and academia makes it unique among Japanese cities.

Osaka is just 15 minutes away by JR Special Rapid, giving you access to the broader Kansai job market while living in a more compact, traditional setting.

Where to Live

Central Kyoto (中京区 / 下京区)

Around Karasuma and Shijo. City center with best transit access. Mix of traditional machiya streets and modern apartments. Walking distance to shops, restaurants, and stations.
